1. Basic definition and core functions

Essence:

The ternary catalyst (TWC) is a honeycomb ceramic/metal support device installed in the middle of Bora Classic exhaust pipe, coated with platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh) and other precious metal catalysts.

Carbon plugging

Reasons: long-term short distance driving, catalyst temperature is insufficient, unburned hydrocarbons condensation adhesion.

Consequences: Exhaust back pressure increases, turbo response is delayed in turbocharged models (1.8T), and low-speed torque drops by 20%-30%.

4, maintenance and replacement of key points

Fuel selection

Unleaded gasoline (National IV and above standard) must be used to avoid permanent damage caused by lead deposition.

If it is parked for a long time, it is recommended to drive for more than 30 minutes every 3 months to maintain the working temperature of the catalytic converter.

Cleaning and regeneration

Physical cleaning: After removing the catalyst, soak oxalic acid solution (concentration 5%-8%) for 2 hours to dissolve the sulfide caking.

Chemical regeneration: Use a special catalytic cleaner (such as BG Platinum) to remove the surface passivation layer through the fuel system.

Replacement decision

Replacement threshold: CO > 1.2% in exhaust gas, HC > 200ppm, or carrier physical damage.

Installation precautions

After replacement, the diagnostic instrument should be used to reset the ECU fuel correction value to avoid the imbalance of air-fuel ratio.
